Inspirational – when ‘inner resources’ help overcome eating disorders

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my work is when I see young people realising how powerful they are. When it dawns on them that they have, within them, everything they need to get to the other side of their eating disorder.

Some of the turning points in my own personal journey came about when I reconnected with my passions, and when I finally resolved to say noto different things that didnt serve me.

I always wanted to travel, and it was something the anorexia had prevented me from doing, and I came to the conclusion that I had enough of letting my eating disorder take over my life. I wanted to experience new things, meet new people, try new foods, and live a life of freedom, because freedom is not a struggle. I also wanted to play and do better in my sports, which is very hard to do when you’re weak, low on energy, and always constantly injured.

Creating a new adventure for myself in Australia, and falling back in love with sport… these were both really important milestones for me.

In any fight against an eating disorder, education and nutrition are obviously key, but maybe the single most important thing is mindset. In my TikTok groups, I often look at the inner EDvoice. (The Eating Disorder voice that is in your ead!)

When young people realise that they have a choice… and that they dont have to give into those voices that dont serve them… and also that they can choose to react differently to comments that might trigger them… thats when they can start to turn the tables and get back on the road to wellness.

In running the different events I have with young people, parents and teachers, it makes me realise just how much wisdom is out there.  Its in us coming together – those with questions and those with the answers – and by pooling that wisdom, that I believe we can make a dramatic difference together.
